Slovenia joins the Global Media Freedom Coalition
On 19 September 2019, Ambassador Tadej Rupel, in the name of the Republic of Slovenia, signed the Global Pledge on Media Freedom, which is a result of the Global Conference for Media Freedom held in London on 10 and 11 July 2019. With the signature the states agree that media freedom faces growing threats around the world. To counter the threats, action is needed both globally and locally with the cooperation of the signed states. Another great success of the Pledge is the creation of the Media Freedom Coalition and the Media Freedom Contact Group, both intended to promote the coordinated efforts to promote media freedom. The signed states are committed to support the actions of multilateral organisations, journalist' organisations and civil society on this area. Furthermore, they support the efforts made by all governments and UN with the cooperation of all interested persons and associations. Another result of the Pledge is the creation of the independent High Level Panel of Legal Experts which will provide advice to governments to strengthen their legal mechanisms on the area.
The importance of the engagement of Slovenia in media freedom efforts had been emphasised by the Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Miro Cerar during his address at the Global Conference in London. He said that the "media freedom was among the fundamental claims" during the efforts for Slovenian independence and that the "independent journalism is a conditio sine qua non for creating and maintaining sound societies".
